Under the Tanoa

Creature Post was approached by the Auckland War Memorial Museum in 2018, as they embarked on a multimillion dollar redevelopment of the Museum’s south atrium, to collaborate on a very special permanent projection mapped installation. Working with Kaumatua from Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Paoa and Waikato Tainui, we designed 3 x 6 min projection mapped animations, utilising the back wooden ‘fins’ and circular floor plane directly under the tanoa.

The projections needed to be bespoke, unique and truthful to each individual Iwi in the audio visual installation, representing core storytelling, kowhaiwhai designs and waiata, whilst working with the architecture and natural lighting challenges of the atrium space.

"This experience is very special, as visitors find many ways to connect with the narratives. Children love playing with the floor projection – they run through it, find sea creatures, sit in the waka, and importantly have fun creating their own stories and unique memories, as part of their Museum experience. " Kelly Bewley, Head of Exhibitions.
